What happened? | In 1931, the Japanese army invaded manchuria. There was an explosion on the south manchurian railway which the japanese blamed on the chinese. They used this as an excuse to bring troops in to guard the railway then took over. |
Why did the japanese want to take over manchuria? | Japan was suffering from economic depression. Japanese felt manchuria could provide raw materials. |
What was the league's response? | The Lytton Commission. Lord Lytton wrote a report against the Japanese takeover of Manchuria. It took a year to produce and did nothing. By 1933, Japan had fully taken over Manchuria. Japan left the league. |
Significance of the Manchurian crisis? | League was proved weak in it's first major challenge. BR and FR had other problem (depression). Absence of USA meant little could be done against Japan in the pacific. Italy and Germany realised the league was a "toothless dog". |
