Flashcards do conjunto (7)
- 1Glass reinforced plasticsfrom thermosetting plastic resin which is reinforced by very fine glass. Adds to the tensile strength of the final product. Good strength to weight ratio and is very resistant to corrosion but resin on its own is very brittle and can shatter. Used in boat building but is prone to osmosis. Can give off toxic fumes so room must be well ventilated and gloves must be worn when using glass matting.
- 2Carbon FibreCarbon fibre composites are set onto a polymer matrix so the final product can take tensile and compressive loads. Ideal for aircraft, sports equipment and racing car manufacture.
- 3MDF (Medium density fibreboard)Made from wood waste (wood chips) that are subjected to heat and pressure to form pulp which is then mixed with synthetic resins to bond the pulp together. This is heated and put under pressure again to produce a sheet material. Can be laminated to improve aesthetic qualities or quality. Fine particles or dust are produced when working with MDF dust masks and extractors should be used.
- 4ChipboardWood particles are glued together under heat and pressure. Comes in normal, medium and high density form. Suitable for inside applications such as work surfaces in kitchens where it is veneered. When wet becomes wet it swells and breaks down.
- 5LaminatesProduced by bonding together two or more layers of material. Very stable, do not warp or misshape and cheaper than solid woods but they are not as aesthetically attractive. Need to be finished by either veneer or painting.
- 6PlywoodLayers of veneer bonded together using glue. Think sheets of wood usually 1mm thick that have been obtained from timber using the rotary cut process (wood on the lathe is turned against a broad cut knife, producing thin slices of wood veneer). Its strong and stable sheet material because the layers are bonded at 90 degrees from one another. Odd number of layers does not distort or warp. If damp the layers de-laminate and come apart.
- 7BlockboardStrips of softwood 25mm wide positioned edge to edge and then glued together under very high pressure. Water based glues so only suitable for indoor use. Good resistance to warping due to makeup.
