WOODS AND MANUFACTURING
Flashcards do conjunto (32)
- 1MDFProduced by ting particles of timber and then compressed with a resin adhesive, can be easily damaged, takes paint on well and doesn't contain rings or knots
- 2Chipboardmanufactured by mixing wood particles together with resin and forming the mixture into large sheet, used when strength and appearance are less than cost
- 3plywoodmade up of number of layers in a verity of thicknesses as it is layers of hardwood veneer that are bonded together with grain direction in each direction.
- 4block boardmade from solid blocks of softwood as is cheaper and lighter than hardwood, is easy to work with and can be easily moved
- 5sterling boardmade by taking shreds of timber and adding water resistant resin and compressing them into layer, used for floors and exterior walls
- 6epoxy resinis a strong adhesive, is a good electrical insulator and is used for a rigid finish
- 7ABSit is tough, rigid, colourful and shiny, low cost and easy to process and recycle can be flammable when exposed to high temp
- 8Acrylicit is brittle and not very hard wear or resistant to solvents but can be made to look like glass and is resistant to weathering
- 9Nylontough and durable will resist wear over a long time and has a low coefficient to friction
- 10Polypropyleneis a versatile plastic that is easy to work with and can withstand repeat bending available in a variety of colours and can be recycled
- 11HIPSis inexpensive and easy to process, light weight and strong
- 12LDPElight weight with low stiffness and rigidity, can be recycled as well as been flexible
- 13PETis blow moulded and can be semi rigid, it is very light weight and can be made clear
- 14PVCcomes in two form- rigid or flexible
it is low cost and can be recycled - 15Carbon Fibreit has a high strength to weight ratio but is limited to been recycled however is light weight and strong
- 16Cast Ironit is iron and a ferrous alloy which has been heated until it liquefies and then poured into a mould to solidify. it is brittle but have a poor corrosion resistance
- 17Aluminiumlow weight, corrosion resistant and it is recyclable
- 18High Carbon Steelhigh wear resistance, makes steel harder and is commonly used in the manufacture of hand tools
- 19Injection Mouldinggranules of plastic powder are poured into a hopper, a motor turns a thread which pushes the granules along the heater section which melts them into liquid. the liquid is forced into a mould where it cools into the shape. the mould is then opened and shape removed
- 20Blow Mouldingthe plastic is fed in granular form into a hopper, heated plastic granules are injection moulded into a pre form shape which is positioned into a mould, air is forced into the mould which forces the plastic to the sides, mould is then cooled and is then removed
- 21Rotational Mouldingmould id loaded with thermoplastic and clamped together, the rotated in a heat chamber and the thermoplastic is melted, rotation allows the thermoplastic to cover the whole mould, cooled and then opened
- 22Thermoformingsheet plastic held securely between two halves of the mould, the plastic is heated just above softening, mould halves closed and vacuum applied through the lower mould
- 23Vacuum formingsheet plastic is heated to suitable temp for forming, mould pushed into plastic sheet, vacuum turned on the sheet forms around the mould
- 24Calendaringpre mixed thermoplastic is fed into rollers, rollers are heated just above softening point for thermoplastic, the plastic is forced though a gap roller to determine the thickness of the final product the final roller cools the material
- 25Compression Mouldingcompressed plastic powder is placed between two halves of the mould, is then heated to a temp that allows the long chain molecules of the thermosetting plastic to fix together, mould then closed and held together for a period of time that will allow the cross link to form
- 26Dip Mouldinga mould is dipped into a bath of molten plastic, the mould is then removed from the plastic having been coated the mould is then cooled. the end product is then removed from the mould
- 27Laser Cutting advantages and disadvantagesAdvantages- gives a clean edged cut, can engrave suited to batch production
Disadvantages- can leave burn marks, slow when working with thick materials and has a high waste of materials - 28Press formingsheet metal material are loaded into a hydraulic press and clamped into blank holder, then punch forces the material thought the die so it takes the shape of the punch
- 29Sand CastingA pattern is made and each part of the pattern is placed on a base board and a mould box placed over the top of it, sand is packed around the pattern forcing it into contact with the pattern, molten poured into the mould and is broken when the metal has solidified
- 30Steam Bendingsteam boxes may be constructed from PVC pipe and must completely encase the wood so that the steam may saturate the entire length of the material, the wood is steamed and softened. once the wood has become flexible it can be manipulated
- 31TIG WeldingTIG generates heat via an arc of electrical jumping from a electrode to the metal surface, the heat is sufficient to melt the joint edges and the electrode is coated in flux which is then melted and prevents the joint becoming oxidised
