Flashcards
Plate Tectonics
Flashcards do conjunto (25)
- 1What is an earthquake?A sudden release of energy within the earth's crust that causes the ground to shake.
- 2Where do earthquakes happen?Anywhere, but normally along plate boundaries.
- 3What is converging?Two plates coming together.
- 4What is diverging?Moving away from each other.
- 5What is a transform fault? Two plates moving past one another.
- 6What is a focus?Where an earthquake originates from under the plates.
- 7What is an epicentre?Directly above the focus.
- 8How does an earthquake work? The impact weakens as it gets further away from the focus or epicentre.
- 9What is a primary wave?Fastest wave and gets to there first.
- 10What is a secondary wave?Second wave to get there, second fastest.
- 11What are surface waves?Third to arrive, move the ground and cause most damage.
- 12How many plates are there?7; Indo-Australian, African, Eurasian, Antarctic, North American, South American, Pacific,
- 13How do plates move apart?Heat of earth's mantle. They move 2cm per year.
- 14How are mountains formed??When plates collide
- 15What is a fault?Structure of weakness in earth's crust.
- 16What is a plate boundary?Where plates meet.
- 17What is an active volcano?Awake & working
- 18What is an extinct volcano?Dead
- 19What is a dormant volcano?Sleeping
- 20How do volcanoes occur? When two plates converge and one slides into the mantle.
- 21How is a Tsunami caused?Sudden move of the ocean due to earthquakes
- 22Where do tsunamis occur?Around plate boundaries in the ocean.
- 23What is a tsunami?Long high sea wave caused by a disturbance or earthquake
- 24What is the Richter Scale?Measures size and magnitude.
- 25What is Mercalli Scalre?Measures damage
