The request is put into packets
Each packet is given an address and a number
The packets are sent across the network
The packets are received by the host server
The server checks if all the packets have arrived
If they haven't arrived: A timeout is sent to request the packets are resent
If they have arrived the packets are put in order
The request is processed by the server
