3.1.2.2 Practise
Presenting Practise
- Whole Method a skill is taught without breaking it down into sub-routines or parts usually used for highly organised skills e.g. cartwheel
- unsuitable for complex skills, can't cope with high attentional demands, skills that includes danger need to broken down
- forms kinesthesis, fluency of skill, understands relationship between sub routines of the skill, quicker to learn and transfer to real situations are positive
- Progressive part known as 'chaining' is when serial skills are broken down into constituent parts and then learnt 1 1+2 1+2+3 1+2+3+4
- the flow of skill is lost, transfers can be difficult, time consuming and not all skills can be broken down
- useful for low organisational, complex and dangerous skill, focuses on particular elements, helps motivate, increases confidence and gives an initial understanding of the skill
- Whole-Part-Whole you try the whole routine to get a fell and establish the easy and difficult parts, take out the difficult parts to practise separate then put the routine back together used for low organisational skills e.g. gymnastic routine
- transfer can be difficult and can't be used for highly organised skills
- teacher can concentrate on individual weaknesses while learner feels the movements and is quicker than the part method
- Whole Method a skill is taught without breaking it down into sub-routines or parts usually used for highly organised skills e.g. cartwheel
Types of Practise
- Massed is when the learner practises continuously at a skill without any breaks or rest intervals
- sessions can lead to boredom, fatigue, poor performance and learning, lose concentration and attention
- time saving, god to groove the skill, can stimulate performance conditions when there is an element of fatigue
- Distributed practise is when the sessions have rest intervals and are used for continuous, complex and potentially dangerous skills
- can disrupt the flow and rhythm, no replication of real life situation
- MOST EFFECTIVE allows you to recover mentally and physically, gives opportunity to receive feedback, mental practise and keeps motivation
- Varied practise is when the skill is practised in many different environment and is used for open skills to allow the schema to develop
- helps to develop decision making, adapt skills and allows overlearning to occur
- the skill has to be learnt
- Mental Rehearsal is a cognitive process where the performer goes through the movement in their mind without physical movements, muscular neurones are still firing as if the muscle is active
- need to know kinesthesis as the muscles are remembering what to do
- help to solve problems, understand sequence of the moves and stimuli to attend to and helps to groove a correct response
- Massed is when the learner practises continuously at a skill without any breaks or rest intervals
