Networking
IP Addressing
- An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.
MAC Addressing
- A media access control address (MAC address) of a device is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment.
Protocols
- Protocol, in computer science, a set of rules or procedures for transmitting data between electronic devices, such as computers.
Topology
- A network topology is the pattern in which nodes (i.e., computers, printers, routers or other devices) are connected to a local area network (LAN) or other network via links (e.g., twisted pair copper wire cable or optical fiber cable)
Mesh Network
- A mesh network is a local network topology in which the infrastructure nodes (i.e. bridges, switches and other infrastructure devices) connect directly, dynamically to as many other nodes as possible and cooperate with one another to efficiently route data from/to clients.
Star network
- Star networks in its simplest form, a star network consists of one central hub which acts as a conduit to transmit messages. In star topology, every host is connected to a central hub.
Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi is defined as an abbreviation for wireless fidelity, meaning you can access or connect to a network using radio waves, without needing to use wires.
Encryption
- The translation of data into a secret code. Encryption is the most effective way to achieve data security.
Ethernet
- a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems.
Network
- A colletion of computers that are connected together
LAN
- A LAN is a network that covers a small geographical area.
WAN
- A WAN is a network that covers a large geographical area. WAN would cover a city.
Client server
- Client-A computer that requests data and services from a server. Server-A computer that provides services and data for other computers o a network.
Peer-to-peer
- A computer that is a part of a network that is not controlled by a server
Packet
- A unit of data that is transmitted across a network.
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
- A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware device or configured node on a local area network (LAN) that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard.
Router
- A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks.
Switch
- A network switch is a computer networking device that connects devices together on a computer network by using packet switching to receive, process, and forward data to the destination device.
Network performance
- How quickly data can be transmitted around the network and the performance of a network in general.
Network Interface Card
- NIC controls the wired and wireless connections of a computer to exchange information with other computers and the Internet.
Transmission media
- Transmission media is what will be used to carry the data around the network effectively the cables.
Internet
- The largest WAN network
DNS
- A DNS is a directory of all the domain names of websites and their corresponding IP.
Hosting
- A host is a web server that hosts one or more websites.
The cloud
- A cloud is the name given to the remote storage of data and software that we access using a device.
Virtual network
- A network created using a software
VPN
- A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that creates a safe and encrypted connection over a less secure network.
