Condensation Polymerisation
Disposing of Polymers
- Polyalkenes (addition polymers) have non polar carbon bonds
- Makes them unreactive and chemically inert - non-biodegradable
- Condensation polymers have polar c-c bonds - open to attack from nucleophiles
- these polymers broken down by hydrolysis making them biodegradable (very slow process)
- Dispose of polymers by Burying, Burning or Recycling
- Burying
- Landfill if plastics cannot be seperated from other waste or not economically viable
- Landfill is cheap and easy method
- Decomposes to release methane a greenhouse gas
- Limited amount of space

- Burning
- Heat used to generate electricity
- Heavily controlled process to reduce toxic gases
- E.g. HCl reacts with a base while passed through scrubbers
- Gases can still contribute to greenhouse effect

- Sorting and recylcing
- Some plastics can be melted and remoulded
- Some can be cracked into monomers to be used
- Advantages
- Reduces landfill waste
- Saves raw materials
- Recycling costs less than making new plastic
- Produces less CO2 than burning
- Recycling costs less than making new plastic
- Saves raw materials
- Reduces landfill waste
- Disadvantages
- Technically difficult to recycle
- Collecting, sorting and processing expensive than landfill/burn
- Can't often remake the same plastic
- Plastic can be contaminated while recycling

Condensation Polymers
- Monomers join together forming a link and removing water
- Includes polyamides, polyesters, polypeptides
- Polyamides formed from dicarboxylic acid and diamines
- 2n Water removed, amide link between carboxyl and amino group
- E.g. Nylon 6,6; Kevlar
- 2n Water removed, amide link between carboxyl and amino group
- Polyesters made from Dicarboxylic acids and diols
- 2n Water removed, ester link between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups
- E.g. Terylene
- 2n Water removed, ester link between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups
- Hydrolysis produces original monomers
- Water molecules added and links broken
- Two seperate monomers with their groups and end of molecules finished
- Water molecules added and links broken
- Where n = any large number
- Polyamides formed from dicarboxylic acid and diamines
- Includes polyamides, polyesters, polypeptides
- These polymers are stronger and more rigid than addition polymers
- Addition polymers - polyethene
- These Conc polymers contain have polar bonds
- Causes VDW, perm dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonds all cause strength
- Monomers join together forming a link and removing water
