Atomic Structure
Atoms
- Elements
- Made up of atoms with the same atomic number
- May travel as two atoms called a molcule
- Compounds
- Made up of two or more different atoms
- Can be seperated in many different ways
- Electronic Structure
- Elements need a full outer shell to become stable
- Amount of electrons in outer shell determines reactivity
- Elements
Group Elements
- Group 1
- Very reactive with certain substances
- React with the moisture in the air
- Group 7
- Most reactive elements
- 7 electrons in outer shell
- Group 0
- Do not react with anything
- Known as the noble gasses
- Group 1
Speration techniques
- Electrolysis
- Seperation of substances using electricity
- Only used for seperating elements more reactive than carbon
- Displacement Reactions
- A more reactive element displaces a less reactive element
- Sodium Chloride + Magnesium = Magnesium Chloride + sodium
- Distillation
- Seperates salt and water to their original forms
- (you can seperrate them with evapouration but this way you keep the salt)
- Electrolysis
