Secondary storage
it is non-volatile storage. It is needed in a computer system to store your programs operating system and files
- Non-volatile means that the data is not deleted when the computer system has no power connected to it.
Optical storage
- Example: DVDs
- Examples: CDs
- Example: Blue-Rays
- Cost effective compared to solid state. Therefore, we are not spending all of our money on optical storage.
- Not very durable compared to solid state storage. Therefore,it can break much faster.
- More portable compared to solid state and magnetic. Therefore, we could put optical storage in laptops, computer etc.
- Has a limited capacity compared to magnetic. Therefore, less files and programs will be saved.
Magnetic storage
- Hard drive
- Higher capacity compared to solid state. Therefore, it can save more files and programs
- Not as durable compared to solid stare. Therefore, it is most likely to break.
- Cost effective compared to solid state. Therefore, you are not spending as much money on magnetic comapred to solid state.
- Slower read/write speed compared to solid state. Therefore, when it is loading and saving data much slower.
Solid state
- Hard drive
- USB drive
- Faster read/write speed compared to magnetic storage. Therefore,it is loading and saving data much faster.
- It is not cost effective compared to magnetic storage. Therefore, we are spending most of our money on solid state.
- Durable compared to solid state and magnetic. Therefore, when we drop a solid state, it will not break that easily.
- It has a lower capacity compared to magnetic. Therefore, it cannot save many files and programs.
