  1. Hardware

    • Router
      • So that all of the devices can connect to a central point in a local area network. Most routers will have WiFi and Ethernet connections. Most routers can connect you to a wide area network (such as the Internet) as it has a modem built in. They allow you to share resources such as your internet connection, printers and files across different devices.
    • Switch
      • So that all of the devices can connect to a central point on a local area network. Switches can connect to other switches and routers to build large local area networks (like a school).
    • Ethernet cable
      • So that you can connect your device to a router, switch or another computer. They allow high data transfer speeds across your local area network of up to 1000Mbps.
    • Netwok interface card
      • Any device which connects to a LAN or a WAN must have a network interface card! The card will connect your device to a switch, router or a wireless access point. In portable devices a network interface card will be wireless. Desktop PCs will normally have a network interface with an Ethernet port and an antenna to connect wirelessly.
    • Wireless access point
      • This is commonly known as a WiFi range extender. They are used to connect portable devices to your local area network. Wireless access points are used to improve the signal in places where the router cannot reach. These are commonly seen in large buildings, coffee shops and public transport such as trains.
    • Server
      • A server is really just a powerful computer which controls the network! For example, all of the computers in school connect to the server as this allows you to login to any computer. It can also backup your files and manage the security of the network. All of your files will be stored on the server Websites and cloud storage is stored on a web server. Your computer connects to this using a wide area network.
    • Modem
      • A modem is used to connect you to a wide area network such as the Internet. Your router normally has this built in so that many devices can share the same internet connection.
    • Peripherals
      • These are any devices which connect to your computer system. A peripheral such as a printer or a scanner can connect to a local area network if they have a network interface card. Other peripherals such as speakers, a keyboard and a mouse may connect to your computer system’s WPAN using bluetooth
  2. Network types

    • LAN
      • A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and peripheral devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a server within a distinct geographic area. A local area network may serve as few as two or three users in a home-office or several hundred users in a corporation’s central office. Home owners and information technology (IT) administrators set up LANs so that network nodes can share resources such as printers or network storage.
    • WAN
      • A wide area network (WAN) is a geographically distributed private telecommunications network that interconnects multiple local area networks (LANs). A LAN is a group of computers and network devices which are all connected to each other, typically from within a short relative geographical distance. In an enterprise or business, a WAN may consist of connections to a company's headquarters, branch offices, colocation facilities, cloud services and other facilities. Typically, a router or other multifunction device is used to connect a LAN to a WAN. Enterprise WANs allow users to share access to applications, services and other centrally located resources. This eliminates the need to install the same application server, firewall or other resources in multiple locations, for example
    • WPAN
      • A WPAN (wireless personal area network) is a personal area network - a network for interconnecting devices centered around an individual person's workspace - in which the connections are wireless. Typically, a wireless personal area network uses some technology that permits communication within about 10 meters - in other words, a very short range. One such technology is Bluetooth, which was used as the basis for a new standard, IEEE 802.15
  3. Keywords

    • Data transfer speed
      • The data transfer rate (DTR) is the amount of digital data that is moved from one place to another in a given time. ... In general, the greater the bandwidth of a given path, the higher the data transfer rate. In telecommunications, data transfer is usually measured in bits per second.
    • Peripherals
      • These are any devices which connect to your computer system. A peripheral such as a printer or a scanner can connect to a local area network if they have a network interface card. Other peripherals such as speakers, a keyboard and a mouse may connect to your computer system’s WPAN using bluetooth
  4. Connection types

    • Bluetooth
      • Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical radio bands, from 2.400 to 2.485 GHz, and building personal area networks (PANs)
  5. Connetion types

    • Ethernet
      • Ethernet is a way of connecting computers together in a local area network or LAN. It has been the most widely used method of linking computers together in LANs since the 1990s. The basic idea of its design is that multiple computers have access to it and can send data at any time
    • GPRS
      • vvGeneral Packet Radio Services (GPRS) is a packet-based wireless communication service that promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users
