Secondary Storage
Optical Storage
- Advantages
- This is portable because it can be played on different devices, therefore it can be shared easily
- Everything you spend on it is worth it because it is cost effective compared to the solid state
- Disadvantages
- Isnt very durable because it can be damaged very easily ( can get scratches ). This means that it wont last for very long
- It has very little storage which would mean that it wont be able to hold as much data inside compared to the magnetic's data capacity
- Examples
- CD
- DVD
- Blu-Ray
- Advantages
Solid State Storage
- Examples
- USB Thumb Drive
- USB Memory Stick
- Hard Drive
- Disadvantages
- There isn't much storage capacity compared to a magnetic storage
- Less cost effective compared to the magnetic sotrage because it doesnt have much capacity
- The solid state has a limited read/write lifespan which will mean that you have to change it a lot which will make you pay a lot regularly
- Advantages
- If you were to drop it, there would be a lower chance of it breaking because it is very durable. Compared to the other two storages it is very durable
- Doesn't contain any moving parts which will make the read/write speed run quicker than optical storages and magnetic storages. This will lead to it being even more efficient
- It uses up less energy which could mean that it wont cost you too much to pay for your energy
- Examples
Magnetic Storage
- Examples
- Floppy Disks
- Hard Disk Drive
- Magnetic Tape
- Advantages
- It has a high capacity which means that it will be able to store a lot of data compared to solid state and the optical storages
- It is cost effective because you contain a high capacity which will store lots of your data and keep it all. This will mean that you dont have to keep buying more to contain more of your data inside. This contains a lot more than the solid state and optical storage
- Disadvantages
- It has moving parts inside which means that the data transfer speed is slow compared to solid state storage, this means that it wont be as efficient
- The read/write speed of the magnetic storage is really low which will mean that it wont work as fast compared to the solid state storage
- Examples
A secondary storage is used for permanently storing your data which is known as a non-volatile computer system in one of these three storage's with advantages and disadvantages. It stores all of your programs data and files safely
