Phrasal Verbs
  1. Are a combination of a verb and a participle (adverb or preposition), that creates a meaning different from the original verb.
    1. Back up = support, blow up = explode, break down = stop functioning or get upset, calm down = relax.
      1. My car broke down so I broke down in tears (first broke + down = stopped functioning; second = got upset).
      2. Transitive
        1. Can be followed by an object.
          1. I blew up my car. (Blew + up = explode, car is the object).
        2. Intransitive
          1. Cannot be followed by an object.
            1. This morning my car blew up.
