Storage Devices
Solid State
- Advantages
- Has no moving parts making it durable
- It is energy efficient
- High read and write speed
- much faster than magnetic
- Significantly faster data transfer rates (some drives claim 92% faster
- More reliable long term storage
- reduced power consumption
- Disadvantages
- Compared to magnetic not cost effective
- Due to the unique file system structure of an SSD, data extraction can be an extremely difficult and lengthy process
- Because the data recovery process is so difficult and takes so long, it can be quite expensive
- Examples
- Phones, tablets and gaming PCs/ laptops
- Found in USB sticks
- Uses microchips to store data instead of magnetised disks and do not contain any moving parts.
- Advantages
Magnetic
- Advantages
- Cost effective
- High capacity
- Cost effective due to having a larger capacity than solid state.
- Relatively cheap per unit of storage. Fast access and retrieval times compared to other storage devices
- Disadvantages
- Lesss durable as Solid State
- not durable due to moving parts
- can be easily damaged , will slow down and eventually break over time
- slower access than solid state drives
- Examples
- PCs , desktops, laptops, gaming consoles and computers
- Advantages
Optical
- Advantages
- Cheap
- Potable
- Can be used in a variety of devices
- can hold a lot more data than a standard DVD meaning it can store movies with better picture and sound quality
- Disadvantages
- Low Capacity
- Not durable can be scratched very easily
- More expensive than DVDs and requires a blue ray player also can lose data if scrached
- has a limited capacity
- Examples
- CDs, DVDs, and blue-ray
- Advantages
