1. atom is the smallest part of a particle

2. made up of 3 sub-atomic particles

   • protons (1u, +1)
   • neutrons (1u, 0)
   • electrons (1/1840u, -1)
     • found around the nucleus in electron shell
   • protons & neutrons= nucleons (found in the nucleus)

3. made up of a very small, very heavy, central nucleus which contains nucleons & electrons (nucleons carry most of the mass)
