System Architechture and Memory
CPU
- Process
- Fetch
- Fetchs code from the RAM
- Decode
- Decodes the information
- Execute
- Completes the task the information contained
- Fetch
- Cores
- The more cores that are added the faster the CPu will fetch, decode and execute code
- Process
Volatile
- RAM
- Random Access Memory
- stores information but loses it one the PC is turned off
- Random Access Memory
- RAM
Cache
- 3 levels
- Level 1
- Faster but has the least amount of storage
- Level 2
- Slower that Level one but has more storage
- Level 3
- The slowest out of the 3 levels but has the most storage
- Level 1
- 3 levels
Non-Volatile
- ROM
- Read only Memory
- Store the boot up system of a PC, does not lose its data when the PC is turned off
- Read only Memory
- ROM
Register
- small amounts of high-speed memory contained within the CPU.
- Examples: the address of the next instruction to be executed the current instruction being decoded the results of calculations
- small amounts of high-speed memory contained within the CPU.
Clock
- The CPU contains a clock which is used to coordinate all of the computer's components. The clock sends out a regular electrical pulse which synchronises (keeps in time) all the components.
Buses
- A bus is a high-speed internal connection. Buses are used to send control signals and data between the processor and other components.
Virtual Memory
- an operating system that enables a computer to be able to compensate shortages of physical memory by transferring pages of data from random access memory to disk storage
