Coordinate Geometry

1. The branch of mathematics in which geometric problems are solved through algebra by using the coordinate system is known as coordinate geometry.

2. Cartesian Coordinate System

   • The position of a point in a plane is determined with reference to two fixed mutually perpendicular line is called the coordinate axes
     • Types of coordinates
       • y-coordinate
         • Every point on y-axis is at the distance of 0 unit from the y-axis.So, its abcissa is 0
       • x -coordinate
         • Every point on the x-axis is at the distance of 0 unit from the x-axis.So, the ordinate is 0

3. Rene Descartes : He was a French mathematician of 17th century who introduced the cartesian system of coordinates of describing position of a point in a plane.

4. Quadrants

   • Quadrants are the axes that divides the plane of the paper into four regions
     • Types of Quadrants
       • 2nd quadrant
       • 1st quadrant
       • 3rd quadrant
       • 4th quadrant
