Topic 5 DATABASES

1. What is a database?

   • A database is a persistant and organised store of data usually in the form of a table
     • Also usually stored in secondary sotorage

2. Entity

   • A real thing

3. Field/attribute

   • is a characteristic about a record such as a surname or first name

4. Primary key

   • A form of unique identity usually a number

5. Table

   • stores the data about one type of thing

6. Validation

   • Verification

7. Relational databases

   • A relational database divides the data within the database into different tables with each table focusing on a particular entity. This ensures that most data is stored only once

8. DBMS (database management system)

   • A DBMS provides the software tools to create, maintain and interrogate a database as well as providing an interface to applications.
