Descrição

The functions and adaptations of ciliated cells, red blood cells, sperm cells, root hair cells, and xylem vessels. I might add more later, but this should get you through any questions that appear.

Cell Differentiation and Specialisation
  1. Animal Cells
    1. Ciliated Cell
      1. Function: push mucus from one place to the other
        1. Adaption: they're covered in small moving hairs called cilia
        2. Red Blood Cell
          1. Function: transport oxygen from the lungs to body tissues for aerobic respiration
            1. Adaption: Contains haemoglobin, which contains oxygen
              1. Adaption: doesn't contain a nucleus, increasing the space for haemoglobin
                1. Adaption: very flexible so they can fit through blood vessels
                2. Sperm Cell
                  1. Function: to fertilise an egg cell
                    1. Adaption: a haploid nucleus, only containing half the chromosomes of a diploid nucleus (the egg contains the other half)
                      1. Adaption: the acrosome contains digestive enzymes to penetrate the egg cell
                        1. Adaption: the middle piece contains lots of mitochondria for energy
                          1. Adaption: the flagellum (tail) helps the sperm to swim
                        2. Plant Cells
                          1. Root Hair Cell
                            1. Function: absorb water and minerals from soil
                              1. Adaption: the extension (root hair) provides a large surface area for absorpsion
                                1. Adaption: don't contain chloroplasts
                                2. Xylem Vessel
                                  1. Function: transport water and support the cell
                                    1. Adaption: no cytoplasm or end walls so there's a continuous tunnel for the water to pass through
                                      1. Adaption: the walls are strengthened by lignin, which is tough and waterproof
