       • Determines the atom's chemical properties
       • are the electrons involved in bonding
       • Roman numeral above each group/column equals # of valence elctrons
     • Location: outside nucleus
     • Mass: nearly 0
     • # of electrons = # of protons
   • Protons
     • Positive Charge
     • Location: inside nucleus
     • Mass: 1
   • Neutrons
     • Neutral Charge
     • Location: inside nucleus
     • Mass: 1
   • The smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same element and have the properties of that element
   • Basic unit of matter
     • Because Once you divide an atom into smaller particles, those particles no longer show the prope ties of that element.
   • # of protons + # of neutrons = Atomic Mass (amu)
