  1. Existing text based adventure games

    • Colossal Cave Adventure
      • Colossal Cave Adventure is history's first text adventure game. Players type simple commands to explore a massive, mysterious underground cavern, solve puzzles, dodge hazards, and collect hidden treasures within a cave
        • STREGTHS: The detailed, immersive text descriptions create a strong, atmospheric sense of wonder.
        • WEAKNESSES: Many solutions rely on illogical trial-and-error, making blind progression incredibly frustrating.
    • Fallen London
      • Fallen London is a gothic, choice-based browser RPG set in a Victorian London stolen by bats and dragged underground. Players navigate a witty, sinister world of secrets, high society, and cosmic horrors through rich, literary text.
        • STRENGTHS: Hundreds of interconnected storylines provide thousands of hours of high-quality reading
        • WEAKNESSES: Progressing through later story arcs demands excessive, repetitive stat-farming loops.
  2. Ideas for story

    • Add health points
      • Have 5 starting health points for the player
        • Player can lose health points by getting hurt (stung by a jellyfish, etc)
      • player dies when loses all 5
        • health_bar = 5 if health_bar <= 0: print ("You have ran out of health. You died")
    • Make it exploration based
      • Exploring ocean caves
      • Have an objective the player needs to complete
        • Player needs to escape the cave before their oxygen runs out
    • Have items
      • The player can use items they find to help them in the game.
        • A torch can help the player see in the dark
        • A pickaxe can be used to mine items
  3. Self-determined criteria

    • Create a fun and simple adventure gameMake the game immersive
      • Have more than 1 way to win and lose
      • Have health points
      • Have items the player can use
  4. Prescribed Criteria

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • The story has to have variables
      • All variables must be used in the game
      • All variables must be different
    • You must have at least two choices for each input (IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell)
      • The player must be able to pick from 2 or more actions per input
      • The choice inputs must be different
    • You must use a WHILE loop
      • A while loop must be used
    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • The variables must relate to the story
      • The variables must have purpose in the story
      • The variable names must match the purpose of the variable
  5. Coding Constructs

    • IF statements
      • Executes specific code only when a condition is true
        • if user_has_key == True: print("Door unlocked.")
    • FOR loops
      • Repeats code a set number of times sequentially.
        • for item in ["apple", "banana", "cherry"]: print(item)
    • WHILE loops
      • Repeats code continuously as long as condition holds.
        • while energy_level > 0: keep_running()
    • Break statement
      • Immediately exits and terminates the current running loop.
        • while True: if password == "correct": break
  6. Algorithm Constructs

    • Modularisation
      • Modularisation in Python is the process of breaking down a large program into smaller, independent, and manageable pieces called modules.
        • def calculate_tax(income): return income * 0.2
    • Iteration
      • Iteration in Python is the process of repeating a block of code multiple times, or to run a loop until a specific condition is met.
        • while score > 0: score -= 10
    • Selection and condition
      • Selection is a programming concept where code makes decisions and executes different paths based on whether a condition is true or false.
        • if score > 50: print("Passed")
    • Assignment
      • Assignment in Python is the process of storing a value inside a variable
        • score = 100
    • Sequence
      • A sequence in Python is an ordered collection of items where each element is indexed by an integer, starting at 0
        • x = 5 y = 10 result = x + y
