spreadsheets
3 main parts
- data
- The text or numbers that have been typed in.
- labels
- Headings, used to explain the data
- formulas
- =A1+B1 the plus sign adds A1 and B1 =A2-B2 the minus sign takes A2 away from B2. =A3*B3 THE ASTERISK SIGN (*) MULTIPLIES A3 BY B3 =A4/B4 the forward slash divides A4 by B4.
- are automatic calculations.
- data
Formulae/functions
- Functions are more advanced calculations that the spread sheet can do
- =SUM(A1:E1)
- The SUM function is used to add up the cells A1, E1 and everything in between. Whithout this, we would have a very log formula.
- =AVERAGE(A1:E1)
- AVERAGE will find the average of cells A1,E1 and everything in between.
- =IF(A1>A9,"Pass","fail")
- IF functions make decisions. If the tes score is larger then 49, the test result of 'pass' will be displayed. otherwise, the result of 'Fail' will be displayed
- =MIN(A1:E1)/=MAX(A1:E1)
- MIN will find the smallest number in range of cells A1 to E1. MAX will find the larges number in range of cells A1 to E1.
Formatting techniques
- coloured borders
- Cells can be formatted according to their data type for example cells with money can automaticly have a pound sign placed in front by assigning a currency data type
- Cells can be merged or combined together for example cells A1:C1 can be merged to form a big cell of A1.
- The font can be changed for example colour, bold.
- The background fill tool can change the background of the cells.
relative/absolute
- relative cell referance
- when you replicate a formula down a spreadsheet, the cells in the formula will change depending on what row the formula is in
- relative cell referance
benefits
- when data changes formulas automatically recalculate.
- Computers do not make mathematical errors like humans.
- Charts and graphs can be produced and customized very easily.
- You can change information in a spread sheet model to make and test predictions.
