   • sample passes along a electron beam, the high energy electrons in the beam knock out the electrons in the sample ionising them into a positive ion

   • negative;y charged plates therefore positive ions are attracted to it and accelerate towards it

   • electro magnet creates a magnetic field that deflects the ions
     • the amount at which they deflect by depends on their mass to charge ratio
       • ions with a low m/z ratio are deflected large amounts
       • ions with a large m/z ratio are deflected a small amount

5. 6) deflection continued

   • the deflection of ions reaches a detector

6. 7) detection

   • once the ions strike the collector they induce a current
     • current is amplified and converted into a mass spectrum
