- Why it is important
- Experienced Employees hold huge amounts of tacit knowledge required to complete processes on a daily basis. If they are not available, it leaves a knowledge gap in the company. Processes would slow down affecting the bottom line of the organisation.
- Tacit knowledge is intuitive knowledge that is largely experience based. It is hard to communicate and deeply rooted in action.
- The challenge is to identify which elements of tacit knowledge can be captured and made explicit.
- Why it is important
- explicit
- Explicit knowledge is easy to communicate, store, and distribute and is the knowledge found in books, on the web, and other visual and oral means. eg. notice boards, emails, notepads, water cooler conversations, company website, blogs, social media, whiteboard diagrams
- The greatest challenge with explicit knowledge involves ensuring that people have access to what they need; important knowledge is stored; knowledge is reviewed, updated, or discarded.
