   • They have a small central nucleus
     • contains protons and neutrons
   • Surrounded by even smaller subatomic particles called electrons

2. Isotopes

   • Elements can have different numbers of neutrons
     • Their mass numbers will be different
     • These are called isotopes
       • They all have the same chemical properties
       • Some isotopes are radioactive

   • columns=groups
     • elements in a group have similar properties
   • metals are on the left, non-metals are on the right
