1. secondary storage

   • long term storage of data, files, software, OS
   • purpose- to access it again later, use software amd interact with computer
   • without secondary storage, software would need to be installed each time we use it
     • so you wouldn't be able to store things like music, photos, videos ect
   • allows the component to be lightweight, smaller, more durable and portable

2. optical

   • laser light creates marks in a pattern on the disk
   • laser light detects where the marks are and translates it into a readable format

3. magnetic

   • read/write move across the medium and change how magnetised that part of the medium is
     • e.g. one level of magnetism would be a 1, second would be 0

4. solid state

   • made of microchips (switches)
   • state of switches determine if a 1 or 0 is stored

5. characteristics - featrure, attribute or distinguishing trait

6. characteristics of storage devices

   • capacity, how much data can it store
   • speed, how fast can it access the data
   • portability, how easily it is to move from one place to another
   • durability, how well it lasts e.g. if it is dropped
   • reliability, how consistently does it perform
   • cost, how much does it cost per MB, GB, KB
   • when we take all of these characteristics into consideration we can choose which would be more ideal for what job or worker
     • such as a architect would need portable reliable ect and a programmer would need reliable, speed and capacity

7. a graphics designer would need a storage device with a large capacity, is portable, reliable and is durable

8. text, 1 byte per character, integer ,4/8 bytes. real 4/8 bytes, Boolean, 1 byte, date 8 bytes

9. each one of these had better characteristics than the others and if we pay attention to which is better for what we can tell which would be better for different workers
