    • "Out, damned spot; out, I say. One, two, -- why, then ‘tis time to do’t. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account? – Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him."

    • "I laid their daggers ready; He could not miss ‘em. Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had done’t."

    • Her conscience affects her to such an extent that she eventually commits suicide.
  3. Banquo

    • In a sense, Banquo’s character stands as a rebuke to Macbeth, since he represents the path Macbeth chose not to take: a path in which ambition need not lead to betrayal and murder.
    • Banquo’s ghost—and not Duncan’s—that haunts Macbeth
    • `That, trusted home, Might yet enkindle you unto the crown, Besides the thane of Cawdor. But ‘tis strange. And oftentimes, to win us to our harm, The instruments of darkness tell us truths, Win us with honest trifles, to betray’s In deepest consequence.´

    • `Thou has it no king, Cawdor, Glamis, all. As the weird women promised, and I fear Thou played’st most foully for ‘t. Yet it was said It should not stand in thy posterity, But that myself should be the root and father Of many kings. If there come truth from them – As upon thee, Macbeth, their speeches shine – Why, by the verities on thee made good, May they not be my oracles as well, And set me up in hope? But hush, no more.´
  4. The witches

    • `First Witch Lesser than Macbeth and greater. Second Witch Not so happy, yet much happier. Third Witch Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!´
    • Three “black and midnight hags” who plot mischief against Macbeth using charms, spells, and prophecies.
    • Their predictions prompt him to murder Duncan, to order the deaths of Banquo and his son, and to blindly believe in his own immortality.
    • `First Witch All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! Second Witch All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! Third Witch All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!´
    • In some ways they resemble the mythological Fates, who impersonally weave the threads of human destiny.
    • `Second Witch By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes.´
    • They clearly take a perverse delight in using their knowledge of the future to toy with and destroy human beings.
  5. Macduff

    • `Despair thy charm, And let the angel whom thou still hast served Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb Untimely ripped.´
