COMPARATIVE ADJETIVES

  1. WHAT IS AN ADJETIVE

    • Adjectives are the words we use to modify or accompany the noun. In general, they are used to describe, complement or quantify the name in the sentence.
  2. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHORT AND A LONG ADJETIVE

    • The short adjective has one or two syllables in its word. The long adjective is made up of more than two syllables. This would not be a great difference or explanation but it is more noticeable when the same adjectives are used in comparative sentences, they must change for example In comparative sentences the short adjective is changed like this. happy (happier) but in long adjectives it is more common to use the word more before the adjective. example: more dangerous.
  3. WHEN A COMPARATIVE ADJETIVE IS USED?

    • The comparative is used in English to compare differences between the two objects it modifies (larger, smaller, faster, higher). It is used in sentences where we compare two names, as follows:
      • Name (subject) + verb + adjective in comparative degree + than + noun (objectt)
  4. HOW DO WE USED A COMPARATIVE ADJETIVE IN SHORT ADJETIVES

    • Rule 1: If an adjective has a syllable, add the suffix -er at the end. ( shorts -> shorter)
      • Rule 2: If an adjective ends in the sequence [consonant, vowel, consonant], duplicate the last consonant before applying r. (wet -> wetter )
        • Rule 3: If an adjective ends in -e, add -r at the end. ( large -> larger)
          • Rule 4: If an adjective has two syllables and ends in -y, change the y to i and add the suffix -er at the end. ( tiny -> tinnier)
    • EXAMPLES
      • small-smaller
      • short-shorter
      • long-longer
      • big.bigger
      • pretty.prettier
  5. HOW DO WE USED A COMPARATIVE IN LONG ADJETIVES

    • Some comparative adjectives form the comparative by placing the word plus before the original adjective. Some one or two syllable adjectives are also included in this category, especially those that are present participles (such as exciting or frightening ) or past participles (such as burned or padded ).
      • EXAMPLES
        • attractive (atractivo) - more attractive (más atractivo)
          • stylish (elegante) -more stylish (más elegante)
            • excited (emocionado). - more excited (más emocionado)
              • challenging (retador). - more challenging (más retador)
                • dangerous (peligroso)- more dangerous (más peligroso)
