Electromagnetic Spectrum
Fun facts about light!
- When it is dark, there is still light.
- Redshift is when galaxies move away from Earth
- Just like water, light has wavelengths, frequencies, and a speed
- Light travels at 300 000 km/s
Vibrations- waves of energies that move from one place from another. They can occur in, ocean waves, electricity in a wire, air vibrating string in a piano.
Amplitude- the height of a wave is referred to AMPLITUDE. The higher the amplitude, the more energy it has.
Crest- crest to crest= WAVELENGTH, they can be big or small. It is the top part of the wave. You can also measure trough to trough.
Radio Wave- the longest wave length, can be the size of a planet! They have the longest frequency, they can travel through clouds. They are used in telescopes, they can be used 24/7 no matter the weather.
Microwaves- higher frequency than radio waves, one millimeter to one foot long. They can pass through clouds as well, they can transmit satellite communications.
Infrared- Anything that gives off heat can be seen in infrared. A infrared wavelength is about the size of a grain of sand. Humans can't see in infrared, but we can sense it. Infrared light is used in remote controls, and video games. When you look out into space with infrared telescope, you can see stuff in the universe that can't be seen with using normal telescopes.
Visible light- visible light is the only part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum that humans can see. Each color of light has a different wave length. When white light enters a prism, it refracts and we can see the rainbow. In a television, the prime colors are red, green and blue and they are different dots that make up other colors in a TV.
Ultraviolet- it has shorter wave lengths and higher energy. Ultraviolet light can be very dangerous and harmful. Our sun has about 7% of ultraviolet light because it is old. The younger the sun, the more ultraviolet light it has, That is why we get sun bunts, ultraviolet light in the sun!
X- Rays- in 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (a German) discovered that the hotter the object or light, the shorter the wave length is. X- rays waves are used for their most common use, and x- ray machines to look at bones through a human,
Gamma Rays- gamma rays are created by nuclear explosions, and radioactive decay. Gamma rays are the most dangerous, they also have the SHORTEST WAVE LENGTH they do have a good helpful use of gamma radiation kills cancer cells, it is also known as chemotherapy.
Dangers of the Spectrum...
- Some can be dangerous if exposed too long
- The shorter the wave the more dangerous it is.
- Earth's atmosphere protects us from higher energies
- Our sun is always sending us electromagnetic energy waves to/at us.
Frequency- The more wiggles in a wave, the more frequency. Different colors of light have different frequencies because they all have different lengths, widths, and height.
