Bitmap Images
- Made up of "Pixels"
- "Pixel" is short for "Picture Element"
- In a black and white image, black pixels are stored as 1's and white pixels are stored as 0's
- In larger images, 1's and 0's are replaced with longer numbers that represent how much red, green and blue is required in each pixel
- This is called "Colour Depth"
- In a 256 colour palette, the image would require 1 byte of storage per pixel
- The more information stored about the colour of each pixel, the larger the file will become
- Made up of "Pixels"
Vector Images
- Vector images do not store data as pixels
- Data is stored as a set of instructions for drawing a geometric shape
- Unlike bitmaps, when zooming in, the quality of the image isn't lost
- Less storage space is needed for vector images compared to bitmap images
- Vector images do not store data as pixels
Metadata
- Data about data
- Typical examples of data stored in metadata are image's width, height and colour depth
- Key properties which are needed to display an image properly are stored as metadata
- Metadata is needed to render an image correctly
