Dr Faustus

Dr Faustus

1. Religion

   • Think'st thou that I who saw the face of God [...] am not tormented with ten thousand hells in being deprived of everlasting bliss
   • Divinity is basest of all three, Unpleasant, harsh, contemptible and vile
   • Try thy brains to gain a deity
   • Hell's a fable
   • Within this circle is Jehovah's name
   • The reward of sin is death, that's hard
   • where we are is hell, And where hell is must we ever be
   • This word, damnation, terrifies not him
   • Wither shall I fly? If unto God, he'd throw me straight to hell

2. Horror/Gore

   • I'll offer lukewarm blood of newborn babes
   • Torment that base and crook'ed age that doth dissuade me from my Lucifer
   • I'll piecemeal tear thy flesh
   • The devil threatened to tear thy into pieces

3. The supernatural

   • These metaphysics of magicians and necromantic books are heavenly
   • Make me immortal with a kiss. Her lips suck forth my soul, see how it flies
   • 'Tis magic that hath ravished me
   • O' soul be changed into little water drops [...] let my body turn to air
   • [Alexander] but shadows, not substantial,

4. Faustus/Mephistopeles

   • How pliant is this Mephistopheles
   • Sweet friend, I feel thy words comfort my distressed soul
   • Oh what I would not do to gain his soul
   • Thou art too ugly to attend on me
   • Had I as many souls as there are stars, I'd give them all to Mephistophiles

5. Symbols

   • Time and Fate
     • What art thou but a man condemned to die?
     • Half the hour is past, t'will all be passed anon
     • Stand still, ever moving spheres of heaven, so that time may cease
     • Half the hour's gone
     • The stars move still, time runs, the clock will strike
     • This night I conjure, though I die therefore
   • Light
   • Blood
     • Christs blood streams in the firminent
     • A deed of gift of body and of soul,
     • Drop blood and mingle it with tears [as repentance]
