Packet switching

Data is split into packets

Packets contain destination information along with data

Connection is through a dedicated route

Route is blocked off until transmission is complete

Data is split into packets

All packets follow the route

Packets arrive in the order they were sent

The packets are quickly reassembled

Easy for a hacker to intercept data

Example: Phone line

Packets are sent down seperate routes

More efficient use of the network

No dedicated routes

Best path decided by routers along the way

Takes longer to reassemble data

Difficult for hackers to intercept data
