Evil and suffering

Jesus - Free Will - Paradise - Understanding

Christians should do like Jesus. Suffering should be something to fight against. it exists so we can prove ourselves

Free Will - God created humans with free will, meaning he cannot control moral evil

Part of God's plan - those who suffer receive eternal paradise after they die, if people are to improve their souls they must face suffering to become good (good can come out of evil)

Humans cannot understand gods reasons for doing things - even Jesus had to suffer. Christians should respond to suffering and not debate why it exists

Unanswered Prayers

Selfish - Personal - Indirect - unexpected

If you pray for something selfish, god will not answer your prayers e.g. please let me pass this exam

if you pray for something personal e.g. curing a relative, your prayer might not be answered in the way you expect, as God has different plans

God is omnipotent and omnibenevolent, meaning he will answer everyones prayers, but it is not always in the obvious way we expect

God answers all prayers in the way thats best for the long term good of the person. Jesus taught that people have to have faith in their God and that he will listen to their prayer.

Why Attitudes towards family life have changed

Contraception - Influence - Expectations - independence

Increased availability/efficiency of contraception means sex is less of a serious thing

Fewer and fewer people go to church, meaning christianity has lost influence over a lot of people. this means more people have pre-marital sex

Increase of equality means marriage expectations have changed Women expect the same quality of life as their husbands, and will divorce if mistreated

As women can get equal jobs to men, they are not as financially reliant upon their husbands as they used to be, meaning they have much more independence and can divorce

Purpose of Family in christianity

Loving - unit - evil - faith

Children should be brought up in a loving and caring environment so that they will love and worship God and Jesus

Christianity teaches that family was created by God as the basic unity for society and the only place where children should be brought up in, therefore its the most important part of society

the Family is where the children learn the difference between right and wrong. Without it there would be much more evil

The family is where children are introduced into the faith through being taken to church.

Why Christians believe in Life after death

Jesus - Imortality - St Paul - Motive

Many Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified. This proves there is life after death

Christians believe in immortality of the soul, which means when the body dies, the soul goes to God

St Paul taught that people will have resurrections just like Jesus

Believing in life after death where your soul is judged on your earthly life is good motivation for Christians, and it means they will live a good life

Christian Attitudes to euthanasia

Sanctity - Suicide - Life support - Painkillers

Evangelical view is that life belongs to god, it should not be taken at all costs

The bible teaches that suicide is completely banned. voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide are both forms of suicide and are wrong

more liberal christians believe that switching off life support machines is acceptable if brain death has been established already

They also believe giving painkillers to shortens someone's life span is OK as it is not directly killing someone.

How Christian Aid is fighting world poverty

Speak out - Debts - Development - Disaster

Christian aid was heavily involved in Jubilee 2000, and campaigns to speak out for countries against abuse of power and human rights

Christian aid is also campaign to cancel the debts owed by some of the poorest countries

Christian aid puts money and effort into development programs. e.g., new businesses, cheap technology/improving quality of life

Christian aid has a disaster fund specifically to respond to disasters across the world.

Christian Attitudes to divorce

Covenant - Cathecism - Lesser - New Chance

Marriage forms a covenant with god (promise). that covenant cannot be broken by any earthly power therefore divorce canot happen

The Catechism of the church teaches that marriage cannot be dissolved so there should be no divorce

Non Catholic churches allow divorces because, if it is the lesser of two evils (abuse etc.) it is ok

Christians believe in forgiveness and repentence, so people should get another chance at marriage.

How Churches help with family life

education - classes - organizations - Services

the Church provides good education for children/environments for them to develop where they are taught good morals

Give classes to help Parents prepare for children/help parents bring up their children and teach them right from wrong

Good News family care and other organizations provide support and advice for families

During Sunday services, ministers talk about the importance of family life and good virtues etc.

Christian Attitudes to homosexuality

Catholic - Evangelical - Liberal - Loving

Catholic attitude is that being homosexual is not a sin, but homosexual activity is a sin. This is because they believe sex should be creative and unitive. Gay sex cannot create children. but they do accept you cant control your orientation

Evangelical protestants believe all homosexuality is a sin. They follow the bible as the direct word of God, and the bible condemns homosexuality therefore, it is a sin. They believe the salvation of christ can remove all sins including homosexuality

The liberal protestant view is that Homosexuality is acceptable, and gays are welcomed into the church. This is because they believe they can re-interpret the teachings of the bible and realize the anti gay texts are a reflection of the jewish culture at the time. not the word of god

They also believe the main message of christianity is be loving and honest. This is they should accept homosexuals into the church

Christian attitudes to women

Catholic - Protestant - Apostles - Modern

Catholic attitudes are that men and women should have equal roles, but women cannot be ministers. This is because Bible says man and woman created a the same time/catechism

Protestants believe men and women are different so should have different religious rights. New testament teaches women should not speak in church

Protestants also believe this because jesus had no female apostles, and it has always been tradition

Modern Protestants believe that men and women should have equal rights and that men and women can both be ministers. Jesus treated men and women equally and they were created together. Some evidence of female priests

How the government is trying to promote community cohesion

Education - Race Relations - Crime and disorder - Racial and religious hatred

Community cohesion is part of the national education system. It is the law that all schools should promote it

Race relations act makes it illegal to racially discriminate against someone

Crime and Disorder act allows higher punishment when there is racism involved

Racial and religious hatred act makes it illegal to threaten/discriminate against someone because of their belief

How the church of England Helps Asylum seekers and immigrants

Clinics - Languages - Elevation - Archbishops

The church sets up legal advice clinics to help immigrants cope with the legal difficulties of immigration

Some churches provide services in other languages so immigrants can still maintain their faith

Christians work to elevate the status of immigrant workers and highlight how they are not a drain on society

Archbishop's Council campaigns to help the workers who have been rejected and are forced into poverty

How religions are working together to promote community cohesion

Similarities - Marriages - Upbringing -Network

Different religions are working together to uncover the similarities in their religion. (e.g. Abraham and Moses - Judaism, Islam, and Christianity)

Many religious groups are developing ways to allow interfaith marriages. This involves special ceremonies

Some liberal religions encourage interfaith couples to bring up their children in both faiths and allow them to choose

The main way Is by setting up groups to explore community cohesion. E.g. the interfaith network to promote good relations between different faiths.
