Judaism survived and thrived through studying texts

"the Mishnah and accompanying Gemara" became heart of what became the Talmud
The Mishnah makes no reference to the bible or other authority
The Mishnah states the way things should be done.....
a literary text that brings different rabbis and speeches together for religious purposes
The Gemara relates the Mishnah to the Talmud.......
points to the importance of questions other than those of sources and authority
The Talmud uses trivia and mundane matters to uncover coherent structure of the whole of life
Talmud uses practical concerns and decision making to address universal issues and refine theories
By attending to specific information and words...rabbis seek principles that make sense of everything
Talmud= a compendium of answers to questions and a solution to "unbounded curiosity"
"Yeshiva"= Talmudic college
argumentative style of learning....dynamic.....helping to find meaning in texts to help each other understand
taught to study throughout life...for sake of studying
