- -Methods of transmitting data:
- Simplex, this is where signals only go in one direction at a time.
- Duplex, this is where it can travel in two directions at once.
- 1/2 Duplex, signals that can go in both directions but not simultaneously.
- -Two ways of transmitting data are:
- Serial, this is where bits of data are transferred at one time over wire.
- Parallel, this is where bits of data are transferred simultaneously-an entire byte at one time.
- Advantages
- Serial is good over large distances.
- Parallel is good because it can transfer signals at a much raster rate.
- Disadvantages
- Serial, is very complex, data is broken into individual parts.
- Parallel, its only good for short distances.
-
- There are three types of cables:
- UTP/STP, this contains pairs of copper wires which are used for LANs.
- Co-axial, This is a solid copper wire with thick shielding used to connect the TV and aerial.
- Fibre optic, these are strands of glass carry data as light and is used for backbone of a network.
