11How is coal formed?
- AWhen there are rocks underground, they turn into coal when they get near the Earth's core, then they get melted and formed into charcoal, then when they get pushed back up to the Earth's crust and cooled, they turn into coal.
- BAs plants die, their remains accumulated and became covered by sediments. over millions of years the heat and pressure of the weight of layers of sediments cause chemical changes in the plants and force water out of them. this changed plants to coal.
- CWhen plants and humans die, they directly turn into coal.
12Lignite is a hard coal deeper in the Earth's crust than other forms of coal
- AVerdadeiro
- BFalso
13What is peat?
- AA hard coal that burns the hottest and the cleanest, the best form of coal
- BA soft brown coal composed of about 40% carbon
- CA brittle brown plant material that is the first stage in the formation of coal
- DA soft coal deep in the Earth's crust
14Peat is not the best form of coal because because it burns quickly and gives off a lot of smoke.
- AVerdadeiro
- BFalso

- ASolid
- BLiquid
- CGas
17What state of matter is petroleum?
- ASolid
- BLiquid
- CGas
18How petroleum formed?
- AThe same way coal is formed.
- BRemains of sea organisms millions of years ago. layers of sediment pressurized the remains into liquid.
- CRemains of humans millions of years ago. layers of sediment pressurized the remains into liquid.
19Petroleum is extracted by drilling into pools of trapped fuel. the pressure forces oil to the surface. sometimes, the oil must be pumped out.
- AVerdadeiro
- BFalso
20Petroleum is not important to humans.
- AVerdadeiro
- BFalso
21Petroleum is important because petroleum is used for transportation, heating homes, producing electricity, and in the making of non fuel products, such as grease, asphalt and synthetic fabrics.

- AVerdadeiro
- BFalso
24Why are some appliances that use natural gas considered to be more energy efficient?
- ANatural gas does not have to be converted to electricity. it is used as fuel directly.
- Bit is not more energy efficient.
- Cit gives off more energy
- Dit makes soup more efficiently
25Which are the problems with using fossil fuels?
- AIt is not renewable
- BIt smells bad
- CIt pollutes the Earth
- DWe are killing animals to make fossil fuels
- EWe are killing humans to make fossil fuels
26The burning of fossil fuels generates many kinds of air pollution. many scientists believe that the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contribute to global warming in a process called greenhouse effect. carbon dioxide us a byproduct of burning fossil fuels.
