- The measurement of the amount of surface enclosed by a closed bounded figure is called area. We measure Area with these formulas given below:
- For a rectangle - Area of a rectangle = lxb (Length x Breadth) It can be measured with sq.cm, sq. m or cm2, m2 For a Square - Area of a square = sxs (Side x side). It can be measured with sq.cm, sq. m or cm2, m2.
- NOTE TO REMEMBER: Area is used to find the measurement of the amount of space of only 2D (2 dimensional) objects, like squares and rectangles. They cannot be used to measure 3D (3 dimensional) shapes, like cubes and cuboids.
- Let's see how to solve questions for Area in the next slide....

How to solve questions about Area?
- Q1. Find the area of a rectangle of length 25cm and breadth 18cm.
- Length of the rectangle: 25cm
- Breadth of the rectangle = 18cm
- Area of the rectangle = Length x Breadth = 25 x 18 sq.cm/cm2 = 450 sq.cm
- Therefore, the area of the rectangle is 450 sq.cm/cm2
- Q2. Find the area of a square of side 16m.
- Side of the square = 16m
- Area of the square = side x side = 16 x 16 sq.m/m2 = 256sqm/m2.
- Hence, the area of the square = 256 sq.m or 256 m2.

- Q1. A courtyard 20m long and 15m broad is to be paved with bricks of length 25cm and breadth 12cm. Find the number of bricks required.
- Length of the courtyard = 20m = 20 x 100cm = 2000cm
- Breadth of the courtyard = 15m = 15 x 100cm = 1500cm
- Area = Length x Breadth = 2000 x 1500 = 3000000 sq.cm / cm2
- Length of a brick = 25cm
- Breadth of a brick = 12cm
- Area = Length x Breadth = 25cm x 12cm = 300 sq.cm or 300 cm2
- Required no. of blocks = Area of courtyard/Area of brick = 3000000/3000
- = 10000.
- Therefore, the number of blocks required = 10000
-
- Q2. Find the area of a square plot of land with the measurement of the sides as 58m.
- Side = 58m
- Area of the plot = Side x Side = 58m x 58m = 3364 sq. m or 3364 m2
- Hence, the area of the square plot of land = 3364 sq. m or 3364 m2.
