- 1Step 1Fertilisers are washed off fields, and into ponds, lakes and rivers.
- 2Step 2The fertilisers in the water increase the nitrate and phosphate levels in the water.
- 3Step 3Algae now goes quickly on the surface of the water due to the presence of theses chemicals.
- 4Step 4The algae blocks of the sunlight to other plants, so they now die.
- 5Step 5Aerobic bacteria use up all the oxygen in the water and feed on the dead plants. Most living organisms die.
