- 1Simple random samplingArrange a list of all members of the population. Assign each member of the population a different number. Using random number generator , randomly select members from the population until the sample size is met.
- 2Advantage of simple random sampling1.It is easy to analyse the data.
2. The sample is bias free. - 3Disadvantage of simple random samplingNot able to get access to some members who have been chosen for the sample.
- 4Systematic SamplingArrange the members of the population in some order, i.e. in alphabetical order. Then calculate the sampling interval, k =Population size/Sample size. Then select a number randomly from the first K members. From the first selected members, select every kth member of the population,
- 5Advantage of systematic sampling1.The sample is more evenly spread out.
2.Easier to conduct as compared to stratified sampling. - 6Disadvantage of systematic samplingCould be biased when the members of the population have a periodic or cyclic pattern.
- 7Stratified SamplingDivide the population into mutually exclusive strata such as gender, age group, ethnic groups. Then randomly draw samples from each stratum. The sample size has to be proportional to the relative size of the stratum.
- 8Advantage of stratified sampling1.The sample is representative of the population.
2.As each stratum can be handled separately, it is more convenient and accurate. - 9Disadvantage of stratified samplingIt is time consuming.
- 10Quota samplingDivide the population into distinct and non-overlapping strata which together covers the population. Then decide on a quota for each stratum. After which, the person taking the sample selects the members from each stratum until the quota is met.
- 11Advantage of quota sampling1.lower cost
2.Information can be collected quickly - 12Disadvantage of quota sampling1. Not a good representative of the population.
2. Biased as the interviewer may select those who are easiest to interview or those who look cooperative.
