Flashcards do conjunto (9)

  1. 1What does the arithmetic part of the CPU do?It performs calculations on data given to the CPU.
  2. 2What does the logic part of the CPU do?It deals with logic and comparisons.
  3. 3What does the Control Unit (CU) do?1. It controls and monitors the hardware- To make sure that the commands given to it by the application software are used.
    2. It controls the input and output of data so that the signals go to the right place at the right time.
    3. It controls the flow of data within the CPU- which is the Fetch-Execute cycle.
  4. 4What is the program counter an example of?A register.
  5. 5What is a register?A register is a small amount of fast temporary memory within the processor where the ALU or the CU can store and change values needed to execute instructions.
  6. 6What does the program counter do?It keeps track of the running order of the instructions and shows which instruction in the program is due to be executed next.
  7. 7How does the fetch section of the fetch-execute work? The first step the CPU carries out is to fetch some data and instructions (Program) from the main memory then store them in its own registers. The CPU uses an address bus to send a signal to main memory to request the information it needs.
  8. 8How does the decode section of the fetch-execute work? The next step is for the CPU to make sense of the instructions it has just fetched. The instructions are received into the CPU on a data bus. This process is called ‘decode’. The CPU decodes the instruction and prepares various areas within the chip in readiness of the next step.
  9. 9How does the execute section of the fetch-execute work? This is the part of the cycle when data processing actually takes place. The instruction is carried out upon the data (Executed).
Once the execute stage is complete, the CPU sets itself up to begin another cycle once more.
