1. easy to set up

Disadvantages:
1. problems with the back bone can bring the whole network down
2. Limited distance can be covered

1. robust - problems with one connection will not affect the whole network.
2. fewer data collision than bus so it's faster
Disadvantages:
1. needs more expertise to maintain
2. can be expensive to set up because more building work involved and more network hardware and software needed

1. very fast - no collisions because traffic is one way
Disadvantages:
1. problems with the backbone can bring the whole network down
2. data passes through every node - this makes the network vulnerable to malfunctions
