1A [blank_start]waterfall[blank_end] is formed where a band of hard rock, for example [blank_start]granite[blank_end], meets a band of [blank_start]soft rock[blank_end], for example limestone. The processes of [blank_start]hydraulic action[blank_end] (force of the water) and [blank_start]abrasion[blank_end] (rocks hitting off the bed and banks of the river) erode the soft rock [blank_start]quicker[blank_end] that the hard rock. Over time, the soft rock is eroded deeper and deeper by [blank_start]vertical[blank_end] erosion until a waterfall is formed. At the base of the waterfall a deep hole called a [blank_start]plunge pool[blank_end] is formed by abrasion and hydraulic action. The process of [blank_start]undercutting[blank_end], helped by solution (chemicals dissolves minerals in the rock), removes the soft rock. The process of [blank_start]headward[blank_end] erosion undermines the hard rock and leaves an [blank_start]overhang[blank_end]. This hard rock eventually cracks and falls into the plunge pool. Over time, the water retreats upstream, forming a steep-sided valley called a [blank_start]gorge[blank_end]. An example is [blank_start]Torc[blank_end] Waterfall, Co [blank_start]Kerry[blank_end].
