Introduction Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was a Persian scholar during the Islamic Golden Age. During this period Europe was 'asleep' in The Dark Ages. His contribution to mathematics was enormous; translating Greek and Hindu texts on geometry and astronomy, popularising the Hindu-Arabic numeral system used throughout the world today and his great book الكتاب المختصر في حساب الجبر والمقابلة al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr wal-muqābala The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing The word al-jabr  in the title is where the modern word algebra comes from.

Algebra and Functions unit consists of six sub units   1a. Algebraic expressions – basic algebraic manipulation, indices and surds 1b. Quadratic functions – factorising, solving, graphs and the discriminants 1c. Equations - quadratic/linear simultaneous 1d. Inequalities – linear and quadratic (including graphical solutions) 1e. Graphs – cubic, quartic and reciprocal 1f. Transformations – transforming1a. Algebraic expressions – basic algebraic manipulation, indices and surds graphs – f(x) notation
