• Amir looks back on his past in Afghanistan and the strength in which it has dominated his life, something which is spurred by Rahim Khan's calling from Peshawar-for the reason of redemption only known at the moment. In Golden Gate Park he watches two kites which symbolise the extent of redemption and sets up the plot expansion of Amir's experiences as a child in Afghanistan.

Chapter Two

• Set in the childhood memories of Amir but narrated in the sense of 37 year-old Amir looking back on memories.

• What occurs?
• Amir looks back on his childhood with Hassan in Afghanistan and recalls their mischief together, the state of Baba's house in the Wazir Akbar Khan District and its title of being the prettiest house, and the memory of Baba himself. It talks about the status of Baba disengaging from a relationship with Amir and purposefully removing him from the situation to enjoy time with his mature friends. Amir explains the status of Baba in shooting with King Nadir Shah and in having a luxurious house to throw amazing parties and, within this, mentions the juxtaposition of Hassan and Ali's position of servants living in a mud hut.
