Hypothyroidism

• S&S:
• - Low BMR
• - Cold intolerance
• - Gaining weight
• - Fatigue
• - Low HR, weak pulse
• - Hyporeflexia
• - Slow mental responsiveness
• - Myxedema
• + If it's from birth it will cause cretinism

Cont. hypothyroidism

• 
• - Mental retardation can be prevented by rapid administration of thyroid hormone supplements after birth.

Hyperthyriodisim

• Causes:
• - Primary, as in grave's disease or a thyroid tumor
• - Secondary, excess TSH or TRH secretion (pituitary adenoma)
• S&S:
• - High BMR
• - Weight loss
• - weakness (protein breakdown)
• - High heart rate
• - Increased alertness, anxiety

• - Hypothalamic or pituitary defect leading to excess TSH secretion=> excess T3 and T4.
• - Grave's
• In Hypothyroidism
• - Thyroid gland failure to produce T3 and T4 => lack of -ve feedback => excess TSH secretion
• - I deficiency
• * Not in case of hypersecreting thyroid tumor or failure of hypothalamus or anterior pituitary.
