UNIT 4 TEST: SOLUTIONS AND SOLUBILITY

Slides in this set (2)

  1. UNIT 4 TEST: SOLUTIONS & SOLUBILITY

    • SECTIONS TO STUDY: 8.1 8.7 9.1 9.5 10.1 10.3
    • Solutions: definitions, +homogeneous vs heterogeneous
    • How a substance dissolves (the steps), and the terms; solute and solvent
    • Factors affecting the rate of dissolving
    • Neutralization reactions
    • TITRATION; how titration works, know specific key words such as endpoint, equivalence point, burette, know
    • that the lab technique is looking for the point at which the moles of acid = moles of base which is neutralization. KNOW how TO solve titration questions (go to section 10.3, and do the practice questions)
    • Know how to read the solubility curve, and determine whether a substance is saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated.
    • BE able to calculate CONCENTRATION = moles/volume, and know how to do a dilution question (get concept behind a dilution).(review 8.6 and 8.7). Re-do CH 8 quiz!
    • Know how to predict a precipitate in a double displacement reaction (FROM UNIT2!!), and write out the total ionic equations, find the
    • spectator ions and write the net ionic equation. Know how to write a dissociation equation from an ionic compound. Eg. CaCl 2  Ca 2+ (aq) + 2Cl -1 (aq) (9.1)
    • Know how to solve stoichiometry questions, given some information
    • about a balanced chemical equation. (PRACTICE 9.5 QUESTIONS!! From Ch.9 quiz, 9.5 assignment)
    • Arrhenius vs Bronsted-Lowry Theory of acids and bases.
  2. Soultions

    • Soultions
    • Solution: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. It is a homogeneous mixture because there is only one phase and the components are uniformly mixed, giving a uniform appearance. Solutions can be solids, liquids, or gases. Liquid and gaseous solutions are transparent because the entities they contain are too small to block light as it passes through. Solutions may be coloured or colourless depending on the substances they contain.
    • Homogeneous:
    • Heterogeneous:
