Linear and Rational Equations

• Vocabulary:
• identify equation: 5=5 int. solution
• conditional equation: one or more solution(s)
• inconsistent equation: 0=2 no solution
• extraneous solution: x=3
• Solving a Linear Equation in One Variable:
• simplify each side by removing grouping symbols and combining like terms
• collect all the variable terms on one side and all the constant terms on the other side
• isolate the variable and solve
• check the proposed solution in the original equation
• Solve and Check:
• 2 (x -3) -17 = 13 -3 (x +2)
• 2x -23 = -3x +7
• +3x +23 +3x +23
• 5x = 30
• x = 6
