Concentration

Slides in this set (3)

  1. Concentration

    • Many chemical reactions take place in solutions.
    • Concentration is the amount of a substance per unit volume .
    • The concentration of a solution can be measured in mass per given volume of solution, moles per given volume or volume per given volume.
    • Concentration
  2. Slide 2

    • Concentration
    • Caption: Cover the aspect of the triangle that you would like to find, then multiply if the remaining aspects are horizontal neighbours, or divide if they touch vertically.
  3. Example

    • 80g of copper (II) sulfate is dissolved in 500ml of water. What is the concentration of the solution in terms of \(\text{mol }dm^{-3}\)?
    • The molar mass of copper(II) sulfate is 160g. Therefore, we have dissolved 0.5 mole in 0.5 \(dm^{3}\) of solution.
    • This is the same as dissolving 1 mole in 1 \(dm^{3}\) of solution.
    • This means the concentration is \(\text{1 mol }dm^{-3}\)
