- "The goal of socialism is communism."
- - Vladimir Lenin
- Communism is an economic system founded on principles of public ownership and rationally planned economy. The most obvious contrast with Communism is capitalism (an economic system based on private ownership and forces of supply and demand).
- Karl Marx predicted that the collapse of capitalism would come about due to the internal contradictions of bourgeoisie and proletariat interests. A revolution of the oppressed proletariat would lead to to the end of class conflict and socialism would be the victor.
-
- After the victory of the proletariat, common ownership would replace the system of private property and the state would distribute resources in an equal manner. Marx is by far the most influential figure when it comes to the political ideology of socialism. He offered a thorough critique of the capitalist system of his day. He made the claim that owners of capital exploited the working-class in order to maximise profit.
- Marx was heavily influenced by the ideas of Hegel regarding history and we understand that Hegel believed society would reach the end of the dialectic when our consciousness becomes the same as the collective consciousness. This would mark the end of history. For Marx, this was the beginning of the communist society.
