- 1Definition of Simulation:Simulation is a process in which a model of a real system is developed.
This model is used to carry out experiments.
The aim is to understand the behavior of a system or to test different operating strategies.
Central elements are input, in the form of measured data or changed values, and output. - 2Correct sequence of the digital simulation:Design a model for a real or proposed system, execute the model on a computer, analyze the execution output
- 3Purpose of digital simulation:Evaluate the behavior of the system under different sets of conditions by using the models to carry out groups of experiments.
- 4What is a system:A collection of elements or subsystems that cooperate to accomplish some stated objectives.
Examples:
Bank or supermarket employees + Customer queues
Machines + parts
Phones + Network
Cities + Highways - 5What is a Modell:A collection of symbols and ideas that approximately represent the functional relationship of the elements in a system.
--> Abstraction of system
Examples:
• Queuing Models: queue, servers, interarrival times, service times, …
• Network models: nodes, links, capacities, … - 6Difference between Simulation and Optimization:Simulation /= Optimization
The aim of optimization is to improve a state and ideally bring it to the optimum.
--> Linear optimization
• Decision variable as input vs. output
• Focus on how the model is working vs. focus on the best solution
• Focus on the characteristics of a process vs. focus on yield of process - 7Types of simulation:• Discrete simulation:
o State of system changes only at “discrete event” times
o Example: Customers arrive at a bank branch; parts moving in production system
• Continuous simulation:
o Change continuously over time. State changes by algebraic or differential equations.
o Example: Nuclear reactions; waves
• Mixed simulations:
o The system has discrete elements as well as continue elements.
o Example: Metal molding and casting; eco systems - 8Simulation Methodology:Model real system and conduct repetitive experiments.
1. Define Problem
2. Construct simulation model
3. Test and validate model
4. Design experiments
5. Conduct experiments
6. Evaluate results
7. Implement solutions - 9Purpose of simulations:• Risk-free environment
• Save money and time
• Visualization
• Insight into dynamics
• Increased accuracy
• Handle uncertainty - 10What simulations can do for you:• Provide estimates of the statistics of system performance
• Evaluate the effects of system condition changes
• Test system before it will be built - 11What simulations cannot do for you:• It can’t optimize the system; it can only describe the system behaviour under given conditions
• It can’t provide accurate simulation results if the data and model are not accurate - 12Simulation allows us to:• Model complex systems in a detailed way
• Describe the behaviour od systems
• Construct theories that account for the observed behaviour
• Use the model to predict future behaviour
• Analyze proposed systems
• Finding bottlenecks - 13QM 10er Kostenregel:Over the course of the product life cycle, errors become 10 times more expensive.
- 14Advantages of Simulation:• Allows us to study existing systems without interrupting ongoing operations
• Systems can be tested in advance
• Allows us to control time
• Allows us to identify bottlenecks
• Insight into which variables are most important
• Cost reduction and time saving
• Visualization of existing systems - 15Disadvantagees of Simulation;• Quality of the analysis depends on the quality of the model and the skill of the modeler
• Results are sometimes hard to interpret
• Simulation analysis can be time consuming and expensive - 16What type of simulations are typically used for manufacturing? Mark the right combination:1. Matrix, VR, AR, molecular simulation (falsch)
2. VR, AR, discrete event simulation (Richtig)
3. VR, robotic simulation, clinical healthcare simulation (falsch) - 17Advantages of models. Find at least 3 valid advantages (or 0 points for this question). The more correct advantages you find, the more points you will get. Each wrong answer cancels a right answer:. Can be used to study existing systems without disrupting the ongoing operations. (Richtig)
2. Proposed systems can be “tested” before committing resources. (Richtig)
3. Allows us to control time. (Richtig)
4. Allows to optimize output. (falsch)
5. Allows us to identify bottlenecks. (Richtig)
6. Is always better than an analytical method. (falsch)
7. Allows us to gain insight into which variables are most important to system performance. (Richtig)
8. Permits managers to visualize the optimal operation of a new system. (Richtig)
9. Allows to compare alternatives, for example select or search for the ‘best’ alternative given some criterion. (falsch)
10. Cost reduction and time saving: draw inference about new systems without actually building them and evaluate changes in existing systems without actually disturbing them. (Richtig) - 18Statische Verfahren:Annahme Durchschnittswerte
• Zeitgesteuertes ABC
- 23Basic Parts of Simulation:• Simulationen erzeugen komplexe Phänomene auf höherer Ebene.
• truck routes and loads
• maintenance and repair
• work crews
• call centers
